Cara + Chris: A Love Story in Balboa Park
This morning I had the pleasure of photographing Cara + Chris at Balboa Park in San Diego. Cara and Chris are engaged and very much in love. The location was special to the two of them, and they wanted to have some photos taken to use for their Save-the-Dates. I love photographing couples and I love Balboa Park, so we were definitely off to a good start!
I love getting to know couples and hearing their unique love stories. The story for these two starts in New York, where they both lived and met through mutual friends. The Navy brought Chris to San Diego, and Cara was more than willing to adjust to the change in climate; so they left New York City and headed west.
The night Chris proposed, he had everything planned out. Still fairly new to the west coast, Chris definitely had to do some research to prepare everything for the grand proposal his sister had encouraged him to do. Even though he had faith Cara would say yes, he had to make sure that his proposal was special.
Chris took Cara to see her favorite Shakespeare play, A Midsummer Night's Dream, at the Old Globe Theater in Balboa Park. After the play, he took her on a walk through the park and proposed in front of the big fountain. He had friends with cameras scout out the location, and discreetly communicate with him where to go over the phone- all while Chris kept a straight face in front of Cara. When it came time to pop the question, they were hiding in bushes nearby, ready to document the whole thing. Chris' sister definitely gave him great advice- Cara said yes! His surprise proposal was a romantic success!
When taking their engagement photos, I wanted to incorporate their love story into the photographs. We used the same location and walked around the park where Chris popped the question.
At the Alcazar Gardens, we found the dreamy atmosphere of a garden with perfect mid-morning sunlight. I wanted to give them a few photos that were a little bit on the artistic side, and used A Midsummer Night's Dream as inspiration for some dreamy photographs. I used the glowing foliage to frame the couple in the foreground and background of this image.
These two are looking forward to a destination wedding this summer in New York, where most of their family is. She is amazingly funny and he totally loves her. There are definitely many more vibrant and happy years on the horizon for Cara and Chris! I am very grateful to have been a part of their engagement photos! Best of luck, you two!
